Phil began his career in 1978 working for a local Toyota
Dealer in Auckland, New Zealand, owned by the Fletcher
Challenge Group. Following two years spent in the Group`s
Head Office in Wellington, Phil went to Victoria University
and acquired a Bachelor of Economics and Accountancy
degree. Phil returned to the Fletcher Challenge Group
taking the Chief Accountant role, before leaving in 1988
to join the Shelly Group.
Phil worked on a variety of projects before developing Shelton
Investments Limited as a bone fide equity investment company.
Much of his time was utilised conducting due diligence and
subsequently overseeing the purchase and sale of investments.
This involved buying and selling commercial properties, car
dealerships (both volume and luxury), finance companies,
horticultural businesses (farms and orchards), import and
export distribution companies, forests, plus many residential
rental properties. More recently, he became involved in
the United Kingdom with Coomb`s of Guildford and Imperial
Motor Components.
Phil acted as a director on the board of all the NZ Shelly
companies (approx. 15), Reliance Financial Contracts
Limited, other non-Shelly interests, as well as
trusteeships on a number of private NZ trusts Phil was also
the Vice President of Shelton Corporation, USA.

Having qualified in Business Studies and obtaining the Finance
and Leasing Association Diploma Hugh began his finance career
with United Dominions Trust, a TSB Group Company. Hugh moved
to British Credit Trust, part of the Bank of Ireland, in
1986 where he won the company's National Sales Person Award
of the Year for 1987/8. This was for the top sales performance
for a national company with 46 branches. From third party
introduced business (i.e. motor dealerships and brokers)
he became actively involved in the corporate sector financing
vehicle fleets, plant and machinery.
In 1987 he became Sales Manager, responsible for a book
of £24 million, 6 sales representatives and three direct
line sales people. In 1990 he became the company's youngest
Branch Manager, gaining valuable experience in underwriting,
sales promotions, bad debt control, audits, personnel etc.
The following year his Branch became the largest producer
of credit insurance/fee income in the country. Following
the closure of British Credit Trust, Hugh joined Mercedes
Benz Finance as an Area Manager and through this role enjoyed
an in-depth knowledge of the operational complexities of
a manufacturer finance house. It was through this position
the opportunity and involvement at Reliance was identified.
Hugh developed the current finance brokerage Reliance
Financial Contracts Limited with the fellow directors
becoming the Managing Director in June 2004.
